County Substance Use Policy

Advice for staff about how to handle situations relating to all substances is now available in the U & S Policy.
A review of the U & S Policy began in spring 2006. Please be aware of some recent changes in the law relating to drugs when using this document. See www.talktofrank.com for up to date information.
The U & S Policy has been adopted by Nottinghamshire County Council, the Nottinghamshire County Drug & Alcohol Action Team and all other partners who work with children and young people. Its full title is The Children and Young People Substance Use Policy
Substance use is a big problem in many of our communities and the policy ensures that all people working with children and young people know what to do when situations arise concerning drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other potentially dangerous substances like aerosols. A typical scenario could involve a worker confiscating cannabis from a young person. See case study.
A new step by step protocol response for responding to incidents of substance use [PDF 95KB] and incident recording form [PDF 33KB] have been developed. An electronic version of the incident recording form is available here to fill in online.
The U & S Policy delivers a consistency of approach, making sure staff are not putting themselves at risk from stepping outside the law and also makes sure that they work in line with child protection and safeguarding children guidelines to ensure the well being and safety of all children and young people.
